Lice On Pets

Itís fair to say that lice are not one of natureís best creations. With that, imagine how your pet feels when they have all of these crawling on him and they cannot do anything about it. Lice can be seen quite easily on a pet (if it is not camouflaged by the color of the animalís fur). They donít have wings; they just look like flat tiny bugs. Once they find an animal and gain access to its body, they will not leave, they will stay there for the duration of their life cycle which is about 21 days.

There are two main types of lice, the mallophaga which is the chewing or biting lice and then the anoplura which is the sucking type. There are at least 3000 different species of chewing lice and about 460 different kinds of sucking lice. They lay eggs, the eggs are also known as nits, on the shaft of your petís hair.

So how do you know if your pet has lice? If your pet is infested, you will notice the hair coat will be dry and scruffy. It is likely that the animal will be constantly itching and may loose some hair. If the situation is severe, your pet could get a sickness called anemia, which is very serious. The lice can be seen but the eggs (the nits), are not as visible.

If you think that your animal has lice, do not panic. Just take him or her to the vet to be checked for anemia. Lice are actually very easy to get rid of, any flea or tick product will get rid of them completely if done properly. Bath your pet weekly using a flea or tick shampoo, when he or she is dry rub a fair amount of flea or tick powder into the fur. Do this every week for four weeks and your problem should be solved. If it is a very severe case of lice, you might have to get a few flea or tick foggers for the house. After that, your traumas should be over!
